Sagres was built in 1937 at the Blohm&Voss shipyards, in Hamburg, Germany.
After the end of World War II the ship was taken by the USA as war prize.

In 1948, Albert Leo Schaefer (Sagres original name) was sold by the US to Brazil for a symbolic amount of $5,000.
In 1962 Portugal bought the ship and named it Sagres.
